Elizabeth F. Getman

Elizabeth GetmanAn associate with Sandler, Reiff & Young, P.C., Ms. Getman advises candidates, political action committees, section 527 organizations, and political party committees. She counsels clients on complying with state and federal campaign finance, lobbying and ethics laws and represents them before state regulatory agencies. Ms. Getman also advises non-profit organizations on charitable giving, corporate governance issues, securing tax-exempt status with the IRS, and the scope of permissible political activities.

In 2009, Ms. Getman served as Deputy General Counsel to the campaign of a high profile candidate running for statewide elective office in Virginia. She counseled the candidate and senior staff on all aspects of running an effective campaign, including approving television, radio, and print ad communications; securing ballot access through the petition process; and coordinating an effective Promote-the-Vote effort on Election Day.

In 2008, Ms. Getman was co-counsel and co-author of the merits briefs in Davis v. Federal Election Commission before the United States Supreme Court. The case involved a facial challenge to a section of the McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform act, known as the Millionaire’s Amendment. The statute was ultimately ruled unconstitutional by the Court on First Amendment grounds.

Ms. Getman previously worked for U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow and Ben Cardin as well as U.S. Congressman Michael Michaud. Her service to these members of Congress involved, among other matters, assisting with the development of legislation pending before the Senate Judiciary Committee and working on a senatorial campaign. While in law school at Catholic University, Ms. Getman clerked at the U.S. Court of Federal Claims and the Office of the General Counsel of the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department. Prior to law school, she assisted with the representation of non-profit organizations at a national law firm.
